Naked exercise isn’t just for exhibitionists

Postby Maverick » Fri Nov 25, 2016 1:24 pm

Personal note: I didn't think naked exercise was exclusive to exhibitionists in the first place, but apparently this author did. And I have been soaked in sweaty, sticky clothes and thought that it would be much better to exercise naked.

Naked exercise isn’t just for exhibitionists – it’s a growing fitness trend

Have you ever been wobbling uncontrollably in a half-formed downward dog, or soaked with sweat in a spin class and thought to yourself, ‘this would be so much better if I was naked?’

No, me neither.

But a surprising number of people seemingly have – and some evidence even suggests that it’s not as absurd as it sounds.

Naked yoga, naked swimming clubs, naked bike rides and naked gym classes all seem to be gaining popularity, with suggested benefits including increased self-esteem and body positivity.

The origins of naked exercise

While it may be making a comeback, exercising naked is a practice that is rooted in history.

The Anglo-Saxon monosyllable “gym” is a contraction of the Greek word “gymnasion,” which translates to “school for naked exercise”.

The Ancient Greeks ritually exercised in the nude, and the dress code for the Ancient Olympic games was nothing more than a pottery flask full of oil to grease up with. Apparently this helped to get the dust off your skin more easily.

(However, other rituals which accompanied these games included brutally sacrificing hundreds of animals and throwing any married women who dared to attend off the top of a mountain. So it’s safe to say that their lead isn’t one that we necessarily want to follow.)

Modern day naked activities

In a much less violent movement, The World Naked Bike Ride is a perfect example of the nude revolution.

For one day every year, tens of thousands of bikers take to the streets in hundreds of cities around the world in a protest against oil dependency and car culture, but also as an unbridled celebration of the naked body.

Founded in 2004, it aims to “deliver a vision of a cleaner, safer, body-positive world” and the official line on the dress code is “bare as you dare.”

While some will find naked exercise liberating, the thought of parading your bare body around a city is pure horror for most people. Not to mention the inevitable saddle burn.

For the latter group, there are lots of other options that you can enjoy within the confines of four walls.

The nudist group Naturist London hosts a popular Sunday Swim event at the pool of the University of London. No booking or membership is required – just turn up, strip off and dive in.

Naked yoga: ‘being comfortable in your own skin’

Of course, whenever there’s an exercise trend like this, yoga is always at the forefront of it. If Harry Potter yoga, rave yoga, gin yoga or aerial yoga don’t quite hit the mark, then there’s always naked yoga – a practice which has boomed in popularity over recent years.

Naked Yoga London provide four-week courses and claim that “people seem to be able to go much deeper into the practice when naked”.

Doria Gana practices all kinds of yoga and offers specialist naked classes. There is a sense of freedom practising yoga naked,” she says. “Freedom from negative feelings about your body, and deeper connection with yourself and the world around you.”

“While many equate being naked with sex, this couldn’t be further from the truth in a naked yoga class,” she continues. “Naked Yoga is about being comfortable in your own skin and the amazing confidence that comes with it. It’s about knowing, accepting and loving yourself at your core.”

For those who are seeking a more energetic workout, London-based company NKD Training provides naked group fitness classes and one on one sessions.

It purports to offer the chance to “be more in tune with our bodies” in a “friendly and unintimidating environment”.

The benefit: ‘a boost to our confidence’

Some experts have suggested that performing exercise naked does in fact have benefits.

However, these benefits are more psychological than physical, with an increase in self esteem being the commonly cited plus point.

“Being happy with your body begins with a naked one,” says psychologist Emma Kenny.

“Being willing to bare all and being unafraid of our bodies can provide a boost to our confidence. People who don’t feel the need to cover themselves up are potentially more self-accepting.”

While I agree naked exercise can certainly boost self esteem as one becomes more comfortable with their body I believe it can have physical benefits as well, such as cooling the body and eliminating skin abrasion from ill fitting clothing. Full disclosure: I've not done any real naked exercise but did do quite a bit of physical labor in dipping up my backyard while fully nude. It definitely made the work far more enjoyable than if clothes.

I agree, Jim. I've worked out nude in my bedroom doing bodyweight exercises, and yard work in Texas would be so much better without clothes too.

Well as to naked exercise, That is something that I do every day, when I am being diligent. And when I am not diligent after a few days it catches up with me. At 71+ my back is not what it used to be and I have a bit of osteoarthritis of the spine and stenosis. Over the years I have had a bit of arthritic growth along the arches growing on the back side of the vertebrae where the nerves sneak out from the spinal cord to reach the various areas of the body. This creates a bit of close clearance for the nerves but not enough to create any pain problemj worth mentioning EXCEPT THAT IT DOES !!! :x It took a bunch of neurologists saying that it was not enough of a problem to cause pain and me telling them that it did anyway for them to switch my care over to the new pain management specialist in their practice group to get anything done. When I explained that my threshold of pain was normal but my pain response was far greater than most and it was a family trait found in two siblings and my mother, "the penny dropped" ! He was slightly amazed that a patient would even be aware that there could be a difference between pain threshold and pain response. He devised a treatment plan based on radio frequency neurotomy in which microwaves are used to slightly "cook" the nerve connections where they come out of the spine. This causes slight scarring which reduces the sensitivity of the nerve. It was like getting a new back ! However it takes a little more to keep the muscles in good tone so I have a regimen of 9 exercises to do that. It takes about 15 minutes to complete and If I do it on more than 50% of the days, my back is just fine and the muscles don't get sore.
SO HERE IS WHERE THE NUDE PART COMES IN !!

Each morning I go to the computer room right after breakfast. It is the coldest room in the house until I turn on a couple of electric heaters. While I am waiting for the room to warm up I do some e-mail and other computer tasks. And in Short order the room is a nice toasty 90F (32 C). All this time I am nude. The object is to get me warm and clothes are insulation. I then take my sitting towel off of my chair (a beach length towel I got at Oaklake Trails naturist resort). I place the towel on the carpet and lay on the towel and pick up a pair of small dumbells and proceed with my exercises. The nudity and the heaters in that small room have my back muscels nice and warm and supple so that I can exercise them without straining them. I do all this directly under the ceiling fan as it keeps me from sweating too badly or very much accumulation of sweat at all and moves the hot air at the ceiling down to the floor where I am. The whole procedure works great but being in a very warm room is part of the secret With that completed I am ready for a day of garden or field or forest work. Being naked gets my body temperature and especially my muscles up to temperature promptly.

When I am done with the 9 exercise regimen, all that excess heat is not wasted (at least in the winter time) as I leave the door open and the ceiling fan running to push the heat out into the rest of the house. In the summer time I rarely have to run the heaters or only briefly if at all.

I suppose I could get my body all hot and sweaty with an extended workout but starting out whit cold muscles would be counter productive in my case.

I was a bad boy and had become a bit lax on doing my exercises regularly. Then I cut a bunch of limbs and sawed them to firewood sizes with my chain saw. The limbs were on the ground when I cut them to firewood lengths. This means I was bending over so my back had to hold my upper body weight as well as the chain saw I was holding. My back had not recovered after several days and my wife pointed out that i had been neglecting my exercises of late. Withing two days of gettin back on my exercise regimen my back was back to normal.

So naked exercise is a good choice for us seniors.
I never met anyone that I could not learn something from.

And us "Not-So-Seniors".

Now that we are "official" empty-nesters, I am nude almost from the moment I walk into the house after work. We often go out and do whatever gardening that needs to be done, have dinner and then start whatever other work needs to be done (I have a second job and my wife does alterations... we are in the middle of Prom season, with wedding season right behind.). I feel that the bending, picking, pruning, piling, packing and carrying are ample exercise for now.

Additionally, we go out dancing about three times per week and for long, brisk walks three or four days a week. (Unfortunately, these activities require .... ugh .... clothing.) :(

Now that our lives are getting less complicated, we should be able to schedule time to workout at home. We have a treadmill and stationary bike where we can exercise together while watching the news in the morning... nude, of course. :D
