When in Germany, do as the Germans do

Postby Maverick » Thu Nov 14, 2019 8:56 pm

I just got back from a personal trip to Europe, which also happened to be my first time traveling abroad and traveling alone. It was a blast, with a few speed bumps, but I had a fantastic time and look forward to doing it again.

I stayed in Berlin for a couple days and, thanks to Google, learned that there was a spa called Vabali within walking distance of my hotel. As is customary at German spas, nudity is mandatory and facilities are co-ed. So of course I went. :)

The spa itself was very Balinese in terms of décor (hence the name Vabali). The staff spoke excellent English (even though I speak fair German) and explained the rules and how-tos upon my arrival.

I had to rent a bathrobe but I was able to bring my own sandals and a towel from the hotel. Bathrobes were required when going between the changing rooms, saunas, and pools—as well as in the restaurant and a few other areas. Of course, the towels are for drying off and sitting on. The changing rooms were co-ed as well, which I think was the weirdest thing to me (I was disrobing as the nude lady next to me was re-robing). I should also mention that I had the option of a changing room with security cameras or one without. I opted for without, just because I'm conscious about being recorded.

Once changed, with my clothes and other things locked up, I made my way to the closest sauna, left my robe outside, and entered with only my towel. The sauna temperature was 70º C (158º F) with very high humidity, and I sweated it out for fifteen minutes with a bunch of fellow nude strangers, like a true German would. I guarantee you I've never sweat so much in my life, nor felt so good.

After losing most of my fluids, I cooled off in one of the soaking pools for a long time, just thinking and people-watching. I noticed that the average age was about 40, and the male/female ratio was 1:1, if not skewed in favor of the females. There were quite a few couples, friend groups of both genders, and even individuals like me. Lots of young people of both sexes, too! Everyone was polite and no one was bashful. I thought it was great to see so many people comfortable with, if not confident about, their bodies—especially the women.

At this point, I started getting hungry (maybe it was all the sweating!), so I ate a hamburger at the restaurant and replenished my liquids with plenty of water. (The spa restaurant happened to be the only restaurant I ate at where I didn't have to pay for tap water!!) After refreshing a bit, I felt brave enough to try the steamiest sauna available, so I strode out into the brisk Berlin evening air and found the little wood building.

I arrived at just the right time. The sauna had just enough space for me, so I threw down my towel and squeezed in between a young guy and a middle-aged lady, careful not to touch bums for too long. The Saunameister was getting ready for his performance: throwing water on the coals and whipping the air around the room—and into our faces—with a giant fan to encourage our bodies to let loose of toxins and impurities.

It was intense, but incredible. I, along with a few others, braved the 90º C (194º F) heat for eight minutes—the stated time for maximum effect. Many others did not make it!

After cooling off again, it was getting late so I checked out of the spa and walked back to my hotel, naked underneath all my clothes. I told the young man and the checkout counter that I had a great time, and wished that we had something similar back home. He smiled and said that many other foreign guests say the same. :)

So, there you have it, my German naked spa story! Next time I visit Germany (or Austria), I'm seeking out similar venues, and I'd encourage any of you to do the same. I know it's quite a different experience from visiting a naturist resort (though I've yet to do that myself—that's next on the list ;) ).

What a great find. I envy your day with nude Germans. Now that you have experienced German spas, I hope you find lots more opportunities.

I was in Germany a few times early in my life, and still remember a good number of German words. I was not exposed to nude sauna culture or anything comparable back then. If I ever do go back to Germany at any time, I will be interested in finding out where it could be that I might experience that then.

Thanks y'all for the kind words! I'm glad I was able to go and bring back the story.

I'll try to do a more thorough trip write-up this weekend, time permitting. Suffice it to say that I solo-tripped across Czechia, Germany, and Austria for two weeks. It was an itch I'd wanted to scratch for a long time, and I'm glad I finally got to go. The spa visit was just the icing on the cake. I'm looking forward to going back someday soon, and also to visiting other countries around the world, but I've realized how grateful I really am to call the United States home (even if we are backwards when it comes to nudity ;) ).

baresoul, one German word you can add to your vocabulary is Freikörperkultur, abbreviated as FKK. The literal translation is "free body culture," but it's the equivalent to our words naturism or nudism.

In the warmer months, FKK is very popular in Germany and Austria. All three major cities I visited in those countries either permit public nudity or have set aside areas of public parks for nude sunbathing and recreation. The Tiergarten in Berlin and the Englischer Garten in Munich are prime examples. (Imagine what it would be like if there were clothing-optional parts of Central Park in New York, and you get the idea.) There are also plenty of FKK resorts (just like naturist resorts) where you can shed your clothes.

As for spas, you have to be careful, as some places label themselves as "FKK" when in reality they're brothels and sex clubs. This is really only an issue in bigger cities. I think it's safe to say that each larger city has at least one authentic FKK spa, however.

If you look at a map of Germany, you'll notice a lot of towns that start with the word "Bad." That doesn't mean they're bad; that's just the German word for bath (but maybe you knew this already). These towns are historical spa towns, many if not most of which still have FKK spas there. The example that comes to mind is Baden-Baden, which people from around the world visit for its spa culture.

Hope this information helps and inspires you. :)

Thanks for the welcoming help. I do though know Freikörperkultur, and the word Bad in place names is like bath, for swimming opportunities. I do not know all German words, but imho I know a lot of them still, but Freikörperkultur I learned later as I got into nudism, later than when I was last in Germany.

In June my wife and I were on an escorted tour that ended in Berlin. Our schedule was rather tight and between the quick breakfast, catch the bus, see the next attraction, back to the bus, quick lunch, back to the bus, fall into bed and sleep hard, and repeat for two weeks. I was looking for a spa experience but none were available until the last night. The hotel had a mini-spa in the basement and I was determined to use it; I could sleep on the plane the next day. I was all alone, just one naked guy in a big marble hot tub. Nice but somewhat disappointing.
