Strips? Threads?

Postby balaam » Mon Dec 04, 2017 11:48 am

I'm still new were but have been using internet fora since 2001 and have noticed something odd here. Not the use of the incorrect plural of forum, as forums is in such wide use that if has become the new standard (EVEN SPELLCHECKERS ALLOW IT! :argh: ). Time was when the internet was populated by geeks who used fora.

What I find unusual is the use of strips to describe each conversation here. A use I have never heard before. The fora i have used always describe these as threads. Is this a deliberate use, as in "we don't wear threads but we do strip." or is there another reason? Even on Facebook I use threads with no misunderstanding.

You are quite astute. Actually, this goes back to about the time this forum was created and, as I recall, was introduced by resident member Jochannan who felt that "threads" were something that naturists tend to avoid.

I called them "threads" I think exactly once before Jochannan corrected me, I call them strips now

Yep, it was I who introduced that term. It came about because I realized that indeed, threads are for textiles. I commented to this effect on the clothesfree.com forum, and someone replied with a list of synonyms from a thesaurus, one of which was strip. Click. So I encouraged the switch in terms, and I'm glad it caught on. :)

Yes, I'd be intrigued to find out what those other words & phrases are. But I do have an oversized curiousity bump & still enjoy discovering new things. I was sorely tempted to settle down & watch an exploration/explanation of Quantum Physics... just for the fun of it?! I didn't. I think my brain is getting full.

It's never full. You just have to tidy the shelves some.

I don't remember too many of them. Ribbon; string...
