Membership Levels???

Postby Desert Hiker » Tue Jul 24, 2007 4:28 am

The membership levels have been updated, as of July 21, 2007.

The changes were in title only, and are intended to reflect the "village" theme of the site--all requirements, and privileges remain unchanged.

Subsequently, all documents, and web pages have been edited to reflect this change.

Submit any questions, or comments regarding this change to any staff member here.

Membership Levels

Postby Ckin » Thu May 14, 2009 9:41 am

You know, limiting the forums in which newer users may post is somewhat self-defeating.

What I mean is: I cannot reply to topics that interest me, because they are in forums that are not available to post in at the lower membership level. Since the level seems to be driven entirely by number of postings, my only choice is to post messages that I don't really have any thoughts on, or greetings, so I may eventually work up enough points to post in forums that are of real interest.

Maybe the strategy for membership levels should be re-designed, perhaps having fewer levels, or making more forums available in level two, but galleries and other features available later, or some other "perk" for higher levels. Or how about making levels based on length of membership? I've been here more than a year....

Anyway, I keep finding topics I'd like to read and reply to (esp. postings by Natman  ), but am not able. Just my 2 cents.

I assumed keeping out trolls was the motivation (though I've never figured out what exactly a "troll" is---other than a semi-human, dwarf-like creature with a bad temper.)

But in the interest of making the site more user-friendly, and encouraging people to think and write and post, (not to mention increasing my overall count) can I suggest will still might think about adjusting the strategy a little to be at least a little less self-defeating? If we weigh the goals:

1) making the site friendly
2) encouraging people to post and respond
3) keeping out trolls

which is more important? Which is least?

Oh no! A troll got in! Help!

Ckin,

Trolls are people or automated systems that create a forun membership with the sole purpose of adding links to questionable sites.

A while back, we had the settings set to less than what they are now and we were inundated with new memberships that flooded our site with links to porn sites, hundreds per day. It was all that Dan, myself and other could do just to keep up with the flood. So far, (knock on wood, even if it's only virtual wood), we have not had a repeat since we tightened down the site.

You should be able to post in just about any forum by now.

What makes you say this? I'd like to post in "Personal Naturist Experiences & Trip Reports". But no luck. My count is below 50 on this site. What am I missing?

Another question about Membership Levels... is it an automatic process that, once you have made enough posts, you are upgraded to the appropriate level or does a site admin person have to manually register that number of posts and then increase the person's access level?
If all else fails.... read the instructions

Also... are there forums (other than "Only for Women" or "Only for Teens") that are not 'public' and thereby still retain access restrictions (even for 'Native Residents')?

Unfortunately, the answer is "sometimes". This software does not always automatically advance someone once they reach certain levels.

I agree with Ckin. I was excited when I first joined the forum, but I rarely log in any more because I've wanted to post in several forums and have been unable to do so. I'm a retired physical therapist and preventing me from participating in forums on health and fitness is VERY frustrating. I don't have a lot of time I'm willing to spend just saying hello and posting for posting's sake on topics that really don't interest me, but I have a lot to offer and a lot to learn about topics that do interest me. Please consider changing the policy. - Thanks.

Yep... it dos take a while when you don't get on this site more than once or twice a week... and then can only post in limited strips... perhaps it might work better if there was an option to post in a moderated (i.e. not visible to the general populace) section (or maybe PM an Administration) for transfer, if appropriate, into the section for which the post was meant for. This would, however, require more work by administrators but could get a member's post count up quicker until they could post in those strips without a moderated vetting of that post.

Perhaps this site does not have the scripting that would allow that kind of activity. (Having worked as a Tech, Computer Admin and LAN manager in the past I had to do a bit of programming and fault finding so tend to go into 'fix it' mode if there seems to be something that is not working as well as it should).

There seem to be a stack of people who only post a few strips and then we hear no more from them. Maybe the Membership Levels thing accounts for that... or maybe some of them are just trolls and and the Membership Levels deals with them...
If all else fails.... read the instructions

I suggest we keep "membership levels" to show how many posts people have made (e.g., moving up from Closet Nudist to Weekend Nudist), but get rid of locked fora for new visitors. I think this is the general sentiment among us Villagers, and if there's no reason to keep newcomers out of certain strips, why not open them up to all? Spammers and the like will be flagged and kicked out, anyway.

Natman, could this be done?

What is the [roblem with expecting new member to make a minimum number of postings? It is not that hard, just read the prior postings and add to them with your own opinion.
