To the WEBMASTER:

I sent this to the WEBMASTER as PM, which apparently does not get picked up very often. So I will post it here:

That is correct, PMs to WebMaster are not checked frequently. I just replied to your PM however since I can see no evidence of what you suggest.

Hi Dave!

Here is answer I just posted in the PM ---

This is what was active next to my name at the bottom of the Board Index Page:

"TurnitinBot [Bot]"

I actually copied it there. If this is your bot OK, I guess!!?? At least it isn't the googlebot.

I am willing to learn, if I am wrong!!

Epi,

There are certain bots that we WANT to allow on our sites. The provide search links back to the site that let's other know we are here. That is how many people find out about us.

Here is a link to TurnitinBot...
https://turnitin.com/robot/crawlerinfo.html

This robot collects content from the Internet for the sole purpose of helping educational institutions prevent plagiarism. In particular, we compare student papers against the content we find on the Internet to see if we can find similarities.

Hi Nathan!

Ok. When I was trying to register the other day to go on this site, I read that the added procedures were done in order to keep out bots. Low and behold, shortly after I got on I see this bot listed with our names as accessing the site!!??

That is why I started this furor. Sorry!

Not a problem. Actually, I am very happy that someone is looking out for us and willing to say something when they suspect there may be a problem.

Hay Nathan!!!!

I looked at the web page for the Bot, which you posted. :argh:

While the supposed purpose is for educational purposes or whatever, just read this!!!!

"Q: What is a web crawler?
A web crawler (aka spider, robot or bot) is a computer program that scours the web gathering content. Some crawlers are specific in what they are looking for, but ours is just interested in gathering as much content as possible."

"As much content as possible"?

Most folks coming to this site are having to use aliases, so as to not have confidence breaches, because they love and practice the wonderful nude life style. ARE YOU REALLY CERTAIN THIS IS THE BEST TYPE BOT TO TURN LOOSE ON A SITE WHERE CONFIDENCES SHOULD BE TOP PRIORITY!!!???

WOW. You have pastors, missionaries, and other Christian workers on here whose ministries could be totally destroyed if this so called educational tool makes all our posts public for possible computer checks of identities. I have been an auditor in government, and this looks like a MAJOR security breach for all CNV members.

Sorry to get on my soap box.

Nathan or to Whomever It Concerns, besides everyone on this site!

Further on the bot turned loose on this site. See another quote:

"Q: Why does Turnitin.com need to crawl my site?
Part of the plagiarism prevention service relies on comparing student papers to content found on the Internet. Since we do not know ahead of time which pages on the Internet a student will use we need to gather them all for comparison. However, we do have automated ways of throwing away content and links that would be irrelevant to our service."

I did not know that CNV is a school, publisher, etc. which would really involve reporting plagiarism on its members!!?? We ought to get a class action suit against this bot and for googlebot on NC for plagiarizing our posts, without acknowledgement. As if we need the acknowledgement on top of everything else.

When I registered for this site, I was told that the extra logging procedures were in place to PREVENT BOTS FROM GETTING ON!!?? I thought good riddance googlebot. Oh well. If the bots are an extra source of revenue for the site, I guess we freeloaders can't be choosy!

I hope this and the previous post are food for serious thought by the web masters, if no extra revenue is involved. Thanks for hearing me out on this one. (Never dreamed I would get on a hobby horse like this one - so to speak - WOW)

Epi,

There is a difference between Searchbots and Spambots. Searchbot can be advantageous to a site like ours because they let others know that we exist buy "crawling" through our site and creating links based on key words that internet searchers might encounter while doing a search for something other than specificially "naturist christians".

Our member application process is intended to prevent Spambots which are a different kind of bot that gain access to sites such as ours with the sole intent of dropping advertising (Spam) to draw people to their own sites, which are usually pharmaseuticals or porn. We have been hit by these types of bots a few time in the past.

The process we are using is not 100%, but it has prevented has prevented us from getting hit with another Spambot attack since we started. Essentially, we are trying to make sure that anyone applying for a membership is an actual person and not an automated bot.

Also, while we are not a "school", a lot of what is talked about here can be used in social studies classes. Turnitinbot is one way that instructors can verify that as student did not copy their materials, even from our lowly little site.

Hi Nate!

I understand. Thanks for the education on this bot stuff. Sorry if I caused you grief. However any one else can see how this works, if they had questions about being unnecessarily exposed.

Look at the post on members. See how many guests there are all the time! Maybe they are mentally challenged like me in registering with the "mystery code"

Hey! Your not too mentally challenged. At least you figured it out.

All I know is that we have not been plagued with Spambots since we initiated the change, and the intelligence level of our members seemse to have increased as well.

Hi!

Here we go again! Another Bot!!?? Here is what I copied for its welcome by others:

"Xanga Help » Abuse
submit an answer
exabot should be banned
Howdy. I'm getting footprints daily from "France - Exabot", even though I have "allow outside search engines to index my site" disabled in my settings. I really don't like the idea of having my site indexed. Is there any way this could be stopped?

Thanks!
- Mike

Hi Nathan of to whom it should concern!!!!

"WHO IS ONLINE

Most users ever online was 250 on Wed May 24, 2006 5:45 pm

Majestic-12 [Bot} !!???
Here is another one. NC just seems to have Googlebot, but CNVillage is infected with these bots gleaning what people are saying here. How on earth are they getting through??? I was ignored when I reported the "exabot" from the other day. Maybe this is why many people are not even logging in!!?? Most people involved in this nudist life style are afraid to communicate with others directly for fear of exposure (everyone using aliases) , yet they will post all sorts of information on the forums even though the site is "crawling" (pun intended) with all these bots dispensing the information posted to who knows where on the internet.

From my perspective, I am really NOT that concerned about the information I have posted on the forums getting distributed all over the internet so far. I guess I am just venting my amazement at the seeming dichotomy of the nudists vs. the web exposing bots mixed in with them.

Even if I don't get a response, folks are at least forewarned - user beware!!
