The process tends to be:

check out all available data - a set both too large and too small

toss those that SEEM incompatible with your preexisting assumptions

construct a story that includes your selected data arranged to fit your theory

publish and reap.

add new data and discard what NOW does not fit

construct a new story and publish another book.

This process is independent of the researcher's orientation.
